“Medu Vada”

“Medu Vada” Recipe

Recipe Cuisine: South-Indian | Recipe Category: Snack
Prep Time: 6-7 hour    | Cook time: 40 mins     | Serves: 2-3

Vada is very popular and healthy snack from South India. Vada is served with sambhar and coconut chutney. Vada is prepared from urad dal, which is very nutritious and easily available in our kitchen. Once the batter is prepared, with little experience it is easy to prepare vada in oil, at low flame. This was my first South Indian recipe, prepared at home on my husband’s demand. He just loves to eat it with coconut chutney. Here I am about to make it for you… take a look on the recipe.

Ingredients:

Oil for deep frying

Vada Ingredients:
1 cup urad dal(soaked for 6-7 hours)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper powder
1 teaspoon ginger paste
2 green chili(finely chopped)
2-3 curry leave
1 teaspoon grated nariyal(optional)

Kitchen utensils required:
  • 1 non-stick pan (I prefer: Vinod Zest Non- Stick Friendly Pan)
  • 1 Spatula (I prefer: PINDIA Wooden Curved Spoons)
  • 8 bowls (I prefer: Borosil Mixing Bowl)
  • 1 Mixer-grinder( I prefer: Prestige Hero 550- Watt Mixer Grinder)
  • 1 non-stick tava (I prefer: Vinod Cookware Dosa Tava)
  • 1 Grater (I prefer: Pearl Store Easy Grater)

  •  1 Water jug

                                Step by step procedure:

To make Vada:
Step-1 Take grinder and put soaked urad dal in a grinder. Now grind it to thin paste. Don’t add water. If needed add 1 teaspoon of water to make paste of vada.
Step-2 Now add salt and then mix everything for at least 2 minutes.
Step-3 Now add finely chopped green chili, Curry leave, ginger paste, black paper powder.
Step-4 Keep aside it for 10 minutes.
Step-5 Take deep fry pan, add oil in it. Take water in a bowl, wet your hand then pick small portion of vada mix in your hand and make hole in the middle, now  when oil become hot then add vada into the oil. Keep your gas on low flame. Cook vada’s from both the sides.
When done serve it hot with nariyal chutney and sambhar.

Tips:
  • Don't add water to grind urad dal.
  • Make sure that your vada's are cooked from inside.
